Installing on Windows XP with two partitions
I am trying to install the game on a machine that is running Windows XP that has two partitions. I am trying to install it on the D partition. The C partition contains the OS and not much room for anything else. When the game is installing, eventually the OS starts complaining that the C: drive is running out of space. It then gives me an error that it can not write a particular file. I checked to see what the problem was and found that, despite telling it to write on the D partition, and even though it does write to the D partition, it thinks that it is writing to the C partition while it is installing. I tested this theory by waiting until it gave me the error message during installation and checking to see how much space it said I had on the C drive. It claimed there was only a few hundred bytes left. After canceling the installation, the C drive stated that it had all of the free space that it had before. The files that had been successfully installed were on the D drive where I told it to install. I have no idea why it is doing this or what to do to fix it. Help?

Your Temp folder is in C as well and will most prolly get crowded during installation. Move it to D or engage in some spring cleanings...

How does one move their temp folder to another partition? Do you just click and drag it, or is there some steps you have to take?

Welcome Speedy there is a way but XP does not like it as M$ made some assumptions in there design process that shall we say do not reflect reality the temp file folder is one of those immovable areas on the drive during a defrag as all the files are rebuilt in that area then moved to contiguous sectors but you can tweak it's size by right clicking My Computer selecting Properties go to the advanced tab click the Performance button the tweaking is done to virtual memory on the advanced tab but i would do some heavy gooogling before attempting this myself as you can break your install.

Re: Installing on Windows XP with two partitions
Thanks! That did the trick! I just temporarily shut off Virtual Memory which gave me more than enough space to install the game, then after installing, turned it back on. Now I can finally play the game! I've been excited to try it since hearing about it from other people who have played it before.

Ahem... I beg to differ, AFAIK the only needed extra step after creating a folder of own choice is to set the enviroment variable %TEMP% accordinglyloki1950 wrote:the temp file folder is one of those immovable areas
EDIT: oh wait, I think I get what you mean, the immovable area you refer to is the file used for paging, and as mentioned in your tip, it's handled by the virtual memory options. Still, the temp folder is a different issue and can be safely moved, even to a different disk.

Indeed, that's why I get such a relaxing feeling when I start my Linux-only pc at homeloki1950 wrote:Windows internals are tricky to deal with at the best of times just it's nuture.
