Request To Change System Requirements

Post by SCghst1 »

Hello Everyone :) i love VS and the community we have here because we have alot of people willing to make contributions.
Although there is one thing i would like to see changed because it might throw people off.
The system requirements for this are definitely not what they say from my experience.
I tried playing this game with an Athlon XP 3200+, 512 MB RAM, and an nVidia Riva TNT2 with something like 64 MB
and it was a slideshow even on 16 bit, 800x640, and all options turned to low, and no shader support on.
i was getting something like maybe 15 FPS at most. Thats horrible. Now i have upgraded my system to 768 MB ram and an GeForce 4 MX with 128 MB
And im still getting very low FPS with everything turned down. I currently have the most up-to-date forceware for my card and its still like
running a slideshow. My main point for this post is to maybe see the system requirements changed to what they really are for this game.

Currently the VS WIKI says...:

# Processor: Pentium I 200Mhz or Apple G3 400Mhz
# Video card: 3d card with 16Mb of memory (although it will work without a 3d card too)

I personally believe that is outdated maybe to version 2.x maybe. if my TNT2 with 64 MB couldnt play this game in any respect then i dont see how a card with 16 MB could possibly begin to render anything in the game. Later on today i will be getting an nVidia FX 5200 which will definitely make this game playable.

Has anyone else had any problems with this game running on low spec systems?
(TNT2 i had was AGP 4X, and the MX4 is an APG8x, which i thought should run this game considering they arent vanilla slots)

Welcome SCghst1 but sorry i have a feeling that the GPU requirements will increase even more from your description it's video RAM that is limiting your performance, have you tried the RETRO detail level it's almost wireframe so should run much faster than 15 fps.You are right that a FX 5200 should make the game run better not the best but adequate again your millage will be VRAM dependent the guy developing the shaders and most of the modeling pipeline(texture packing) try's to run his 7800 GTX into the ground during testing so that may be the sweet point for a GPU

What, it might throw off all the people with Riva TNT2's? That card is about a decade old; a decade is a long time in regular time, but in computer development time that's ancient. That's not a last gen card, or the gen before that card; that card is 10 generations old! The requirements in the wiki most likely havn't been changed since 2001 or something, but it should now say something like min 1ghz processor 1 gig of ram, 128 meg video card.

I was just saying that someone should change the system requirements because if you do a search for "vegastrike system requirements" on google, it comes up with very very low specs from the wiki and other sources. And, considering the game doesnt use those low specs anymore, i was just SUGGESTING to change them on the wiki. Thats all

well I do find this very interesting.
My question is:
can't you guys make game run faster?
what point is there to having a game that requires 10 gillion bytes of CPU power?

I've been struggling just to get it to run on my dual processor 1.1ghz system.

What refinements can I do to make the game run faster?
Instead of loading *.png files and jpg files can't you find a simpler way to show graphics?
what type of system is recommended for running vegastrike? (and don't say Wopper)

Have a look at my sig i run it just fine calvinthedestroyer the trick is to set how many solar systems are kept in RAM play with the first setting in the setup app "Computer" i use 512 + 1GB swap now check your frame rate it is displayed at the right edge of the screen in flight then play with the "Video" "Shaders" and "Resolution" settings we are tiring to speed it up and lighten the memory footprint you should get it to a playable state, the problem is not with the CPU but with memory usage but it's not a trivial task with limited resources (very few coders who understand the code base) who are volunteers and have lives as well so it takes time to getting anything done.Oh and BTW welcome.

anyone tested vegastrike on an asus eeepc?
here are the specs:
intel atom cpu @ 1.6ghz with hyperthreading
1 gb ram
intel 945GME graphics card (not sure about how much video memory it has)

(i'll try to test it as soon as I find ot how to cross-compile vegastrike on my 64bit desktop (the atom is 32bit)

That would not be very good performance wise as the intel 945GME has limited shader support and it shares the RAM for it's VRAM like most in-board GPU's so if it does run it will be slow. But it should be possible to cross-compile it on your 64-bit box by changing the target architecture.

Hi all.

I'm interested in this game but suspect it may be beyond my laptop's abilities. Could you perhaps suggest a guideline spec for using the Retro setting that Loki1950 mentioned.
I don't currently have details of my laptop's specification with me, but it is currently able to run Freelancer without much difficulty (perhaps a little jerkiness during major battles) and I have installed X2, which seems to run okay but I haven't taken it very far yet and I understand the memory gets more burdened as the player's empire increases. I do also have a theoretically much more powerful tower PC, but it is currently as much use as a breeze block :( and I haven't had the time or money to get it sorted out.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome malcius if you can run X2 i suspect that VS will run not too slowly, but i would prefer knowing some more about it before i recommend specific settings as finding the sweet spot can be tricky like a lot of games.my aim is max eye candy, max playability my current rig lets me play at maximum setting but then so did my old box that is mentioned in my sig and most current laptops out spec it
