My ship won't move

Post by Durandal »

I'm brand new to the game, so bear with me. I cannot get my ship to move at all. I turn the engines up all the way and my ship still does not move. What am I doing wrong/What do I need to do?

We both brand new to the game so its all good.

Firstly go and read some documentation. If you open up the user manual and scroll down to the "In Flight Statis Check" Its a monologue on how to control your ship.

Then some things that might prevent you from moving are turning the FCMP off with the ` (Tilde ~) key. It must be on before your ship will move, or change direction.

Try selecting a target (T or N keys) and then clicking A. This will activate the autopilot and fly you to your target.

If you have done this and even holding in the TAB key (Full throttle I believe) doesn't get you moving then I don't know what your problem is and you are gonna have to elaborate before I can help you any more.

Welcome Durandal as rothalem said the PDF manual in the documentation folder there is also a updated readme and the manual has a key binding table on it's last pages should alleviate some of the confusion as just about every key has a function  That and some times the only way to know if you are moving is the range numbers on the right VDU.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I read the documentation and even printed out the flight controls but it didn't still. However, when I set it to autopilot it did go towards the target. But I will try turning FCMP off in case that is the issue

btw, I'm running it on a Mac OS X 10.4.11

A bit of a problem with with the current Mac build for some reason the "alt" is not recognized at the moment  the work around is to change the bindings in the vegastrike.config file one that you don't need to change is the "Docking Request" key "alt 0" as the Docking key "d" doubles up on that function .and please feel free to post if you have any questions 8)

Also make sure you don't have chat open (there would be a little flashing cursor in the upper left). I think the key for this is "]", which is slightly annoying as it is right next to the throttle key... Press "]" again or return to exit.

I'm having the same problem with Ubuntu Hardy and the latest binaries. Could you solve this problem?

Welcome fvaresi which latest binaries where did you download them from if. it is the one from the Ubuntu repos if so you have the latest binaries but the old data set as both Debian and Ubuntu feel that it is to big  Apart from that you don't give me much information on what exactly what your problem is

Wow! That's was quick! :o You are right, I haven't provided much detail.

I downloaded the binaries here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/vegast ... irror=osdn. So I guess I have the latest data. I'm aware that the repository versions are quite old.

The problem is that despite using tab, - and = to add velocity, the ship doesn't move. It does show the velocity in the bottom of the screen, but no movement. However, if i target a ship and use automatic pilot mode it moves.

I already tried the ~ and the chat suggestions.

Anything else I could provide to give you a clue? Thanks for the help and it seems you have done a great job with this game. Can't wait to enjoy it :D

Ok then does the right number at the bottom of the screen change value when you toggle "y" key between combat and flight mode. Also try targeting one of the bases point your ship at it watch the range value in the right VDU does it get smaller if it does you are moving :D hitting the + and - keys should change the left number at the bottom.BTW the numbers are meters/sec and the range is also in meters. If there are no changes then you are not moving and we have to get more creative in finding the problem.

It seems I'm actually moving, as the range measure increases and decreases. The thing is that the speed achieved by the automatic pilot mode is much higher than the one I achieve by hitting tab. It seems my ship is too slow :P

Anyway, thanks for the help and sorry about the confusion.

You are moving fast it is just that there are no objects close enough for you to notice and compare and the auto-pilot use an another type of propulsion the SPEC drive with fiddles with space-time and mass.It is used to find new systems not on the jump network with very specialised exploratory vessels that we don't model. The VegaTrek(StarTrek) mod uses it instead of the jump points.

I have the same problem — SPEC drive works well, but maneuvering seems pretty much impossible. I can imagine I'm actually flying at high speed, but even jump points fly faster than I do! It's a miracle when I actually catch them...

Maybe my refurbished Llama is too heavy to move? I upgraded capacitors, reaction drive, but also shields...

My HUD says mass is 1328% of base. Is that bad? :-P I sold as much cargo as I could, I'm still up to 160%.

Another thread explained that if the ratio of energy production to consumption is not enough, then Overdrive will not work. Hmm. Maybe I have too many gadgets on my poor Llama, and that's why it barely moves?

Are there any tables or so that explain how the ratios balance out so that we can actually maneuver outside the SPEC drive? I tried to find them on the manuals but no luck so far...
I'm just a virtual girl in a virtual world...

I once had an avatar picture on my profile. That was a decade ago. I tried to update it. Poof, there went my avatar image, once and for all, blown to smithereens.

First welcome aboard Gweneth that mass percentage does seem a bit high which means that you should see very low acceleration and sluggish turns I haven't flown the starting ship in a long time so I will fire my version and check out the Llama again and get right back with my evaluation and hopefully some advice on brick handling ;)
