Could that be more complicated? :(

Post by lejatorn »

Hi,
I've finally managed (I think...) to compile Vegastrike, but when I try to launch it, a window open and close just a second after and I got this error message:

FactionXML:LoadXML factions.xml
Failed to open 'factions.xml' this probably means it can't find the data directory
vegastrike: faction_xml.cpp:324: static void Faction::LoadXML(const char*, char*, int): Assertion `0' failed.
Abandon

I ran a search in all my tree and there is nowere a factions.xml file. It seems that I had a lot of problems with this Data dir so I would like to be sure: is it the dir which is contained in the archive there:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vega ... 2?download ?
Because I also ran a search in the Data dir contained in this and there is no such a file in there too...

Another thing, I saw somewhere that I had to run vsinstall and vssetup, is it true? Because I don't have neither of these files too...

Could someone please enlight me about all these things?

factions.xml should be located at the top of the data dir.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vega ... 2?download
contains the entire game, including the data dir.

Just a question, do you have anything in your data dir?

Btw, it should be about 215 mb, or ~270 mb if you have the music.

Thx for your reply.

Actually, I had somethings in my data dir but as I suspected I lacked a lot of files. I downloaded everything by cvs to compare and there is a huge difference. Now I have all the required files (including the musics) except for vsinstall that I still don't have but it doesn't seem vital to play.

Anyway, it's weird and I think someone should check if
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vega ... 2?download really contains everything. Have you used this one yourself?

So far, I have managed to recompile from cvs, the game seems to be launched fine except that none of my shift keys are working and as a consequence I cannot quit the first help screen with "shift-M"; pretty annoying since it covers almost al the screen.... :?
I looked into ~./vegastrike/vegastrike.conf where there are the bindings but I haven't found the line for this help screen. Would someone know how I can change the binding for this function?

ok, in case someone have the same problem in the future, I found what is the name of the function : command="Cockpit::NavScreen" ,
I found that in http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/* ... g?rev=HEAD
and it worked! :P

I can finally play at VegaStrike, let's see what's all this fuss about!

 Umm, no. I used the .gz, but it's not available anymore. However the size difference between them was negligible, from what i remember.
The rpms uses gzip though. You could just add the files up.

All releases are around 170 mb. So it would seem rather reasonable to assume that the .bz2 also includes all the data.

Glad you got it working anyway :D

Actually, I used to think like you but now I'm very confused:
I made myself a .tar.gz containing vssetup, vegastrike and data dir (the ones I got from cvs) with everything, INCLUDING the musics and it is only 167MB in size; whereas as you said the .bz2 I downloaded first is around 170MB and I believe it doesn't contain everything (I am not sure about the musics, unfortunately I deleted the .bz2)...
So I'm very tempted to say: how on Earth did they make this .bz2 ?

But as you said I am having it working now, so except for some keybord problems, everything is fine :D
