Wiki update
Q: Does anyone know the maximum number of active missions that can be taken at any time (or even if there is a limit)? Is there a cancelling feature if a mission is incomplete (e.g. a cargo mission is failed if next dock is not to mission target. Or a bounty mission lasts only a limited period) or will active missions just build up. What happens if you cannot complete a mission.

Well missions go away when you reload or load from a saved game. One way to cancel missions would be to save and then load.
Another way is to let whoever you are trying to defend die, but that doesn't work very well.
Also, the objectives list is a good overview of the active missions.
You can only have 3 missions at a time (Well really four at a time if you include the privateer mission)

Questions
Is there a reason for having accepted missions disappear on reload?
Eh? privateer mission? Is that the explore mission? Or is this some 'special' fixer mission?

privateer is the explore_universe mission (default mission)
The reason is that active missions are not saved in saved games. And there isn't an easy workaround... actually we have implemented pickling of missions, but that is also difficult, becaus it still has to know to load 3 dynamically generated missions whose source are not around anymore. (the source gets overwritten if you dock to another base, and all that is left is a gigantic mission structure.)
