To clarify loki1950's response: there are people working on making a multiplayer version, but currently Vegastrike is a single player spacesim/rpg.
Am I...

Naive? Maybe...
Ignorant? Hopelessly.
Stupid? Heck no!

To clarify Daemonward's response: Umm, you should read the forums a bit. Actually, VS is a single player game, with working deathmatch multiplayer, no current MMORPG, and a cool dude (captain{}blood) is currently setting up a server for everyone :D. Setting up a LAN server is possible as well, but it is not for the average guy. You really need to know what you are doing, it is not simple (well, at least of what I've read :? ).

A LAN Deathmatch game is easy to set up (and it was included in the 0.5.0 release). Basically you start "vegaserver", which will print your IP address out to the console. Then, you load Vega Strike, select to manually connect, and type in that IP address and also a callsign.

I can't think of any ways to make a deathmatch game any easier to set up. If there are any places that tripped you up, I would like to know. There is some work in progress to make an online listing of all game servers, so you can connect to someone else if they are hosting a deathmatch game.

On the other hand, setting up a MMORPG (with the ability to save games) is really tricky right now. Currently, many features work in MMO style--but the "M" (massively) does not work too well yet since latency gets too high with only a hundred AI players--I think this is a bug in the message loop--that it only sends a network message once per frame.
Also, the gameplay is boring (you can't interact with other players except by chatting and killing them)

@ace123
I will try the method you described above, after I solve some serious issues that I will probably post in the bug triage. :?
